Christina Joy
About the Artist
Born in Ithaca, New York, Christine Joy graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a BFA in Printmaking. In 1980 after completing a master’s program in art therapy at Vermont College she moved west to Bozeman, Montana. She began working with willow shortly thereafter believing it would be a brief period of experimentation trying to construct basket forms. Forty years later she is still weaving and experimenting focusing on sculptural forms.
Artist Statement
My work begins with a love of willow. Willow grows wild and abundantly in Montana. It is a beautiful traditional basket material, strong and flexible. Harvesting each autumn I feel a partnership between the willow and myself. I find it a wonderfully expressive medium.
